Elsipogtog Update with Ossie Michelin; Plus First Nations Education in Toronto from Martha Troian

Journalist Ossie Michelin joined Indigenous Waves this week to update and report on the situation happening in unceded, Mi’kMaq territory of Elsipogtog, where Indigenous and non-Indigenous residents are protesting Texas based SWN Resources shale gas exploration due to the detrimental impacts to the land and water. Ossie gives us his first hand accounts of some of the RCMP abuses and arrests, the injunctions and the situation on the ground.

We also have our first contribution from segment producer Martha Troian, a short radio documentary on First Nations Education in Toronto.

Ossie Michelin is of mixed Inuit heritage from North West River, Labrador. He has been working for the Aboriginal Peoples Television Network for about four years. For the last six months he has been covering the Mi’kmaq lead anti fracking movement in New Brunswick and was present last month when RCMP raided the anti fracking barricade in Rexton.

Martha Troian (Maiingan) is Anishinawbe Kwe originally from Lac Seul First Nation located in northwestern Ontario. A multi-media journalist, Martha writes about Indigenous politics, women and children and media representation.
